Labor Day trip to upstate New York, and at one stop I could only get some crappy low octane gas at a station that looked as if they would sell diesel for gas if they thought they could get away with it. I usually use Sunoco 94 octane here in PA. Anywho, pulling back out onto the interstate, under near full boost, I heard a sound just like several BB's rattling around inside a large tin can, maybe with a little bit of fine gravel mixed in. Thanks to TT.net, I knew what I was hearing and why. I made sure that I didn't boost hard. I had only put a couple of gallons of the low octane stuff in the tank, so up the road I was able to top off with some 92 octane at a Hess station and the sound disappeared. The "low" octane gas was labeled 91 octane. I didn't think that would make a big enough difference to cause detonation. But then again, when I think of the difference raising the octane a point or two makes with the toluene I sometimes use, then I guess the results are consistent.
